Mercury Jumped the Line

When Mercury Jumped the Line

In the Fall o’ ‘75 the Denver-Pacific owned Mercury locomotive went off the rails in Nevada. 43 lives were lost in the tragedy. The papers says a local bandit group had blasted the rails but, some folk are prone ta sayin’ was the engineer fault on account his drinking. Guess we won’t know for sure since the engineer up and vanished after, coulda been killed too. Since then, most folk call it the time “Mercury jumped the line.”
